Hulst’s Overtime Winner Lifts Lander to Third Straight Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - For the fourth time this season, the Lander Field Hockey team needed an extra period to decide a game and the Bearcats would capitalize as a Converse player deflected in a Victoria Hulst (Maarssen, Netherlands) shot to give Lander the 2-1 win over the Converse Valkyries on Sunday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.

The win gave Lander the season sweep over the Valkyries, the first win coming also via a 2-1 scoreline on September 17th. It was Lander's third straight over Converse and their first win in the series in Spartanburg.

Lander improved to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the South Atlantic Conference while Converse dropped to 7-5 and 5-5 in league play.

The 2-1 scoreline is a familiar one for Lander as it was the eighth time this season that the Bearcats saw a game end with that score. The Blue and Gold are 5-3 in those games.

The game started in the worst possible way as Converse struck less than a minute into the game off a loose save from Isabel Elenga (Hillegom, Netherlands). Lander could not find any footing offensively for the first 15 minutes as they did not record a shot in the first quarter.

Lander grew into the game in the second quarter and the game was fairly evenly matched the rest of the way. However, the Bearcats went into the halftime break still trailing by one.

The Bearcats killed off an early green card in the third quarter. Then, with just under halfway through the period, Lander found the tying goal as Meredith Wong (San Diego, Ca.) passed off to Lauren Punt (Maasdam, Netherlands) who ripped a shot that was deflected in by Dusty-Rose Miller (Crisfield, Md.).

Lander had a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter as they were awarded a penalty corner as the horn sounded but the ensuing shot by Mirte Van Roosebeke (Zonhoven, Belgium) went wide.

Just over five minutes into overtime, Hulst found some shooting space at the shot of the circle and took a shot that was deflected in off of Converse's Lara Toranzo to give Lander the win.

The Bearcats return home on Tuesday to face the Wingate Bulldogs, who sit atop the SAC Standings at 7:00 PM at Frank Hill Stadium. The match is the team's Code Blue game and Lander will also honor Mollie McGann (Fredericksburg, Va.), the team's lone senior, before the match.
