Bearcats Roll Railsplitters to win Fifth Straight

GREENWOOD - The Lander Field Hockey team put up a season-high 39 shots, including 26 on target, as they dominated from start to finish en route to a 5-0 win over the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters on Thursday evening.

The Bearcats extended their program-record winning streak to five straight as they improved to 5-1 overall and in SAC Play while Lincoln Memorial fell to 0-10 overall and 0-6 in SAC Play.

Lander would waste no time getting on the front foot as Lauren Punt (Maasdam, Netherlands) would be sprung on the breakaway and brought down within the circle for a penalty stroke, unfortunately the attempt would go just high and the game remained scoreless. The Bearcats kept the pressure on as they put up 12 shot attempts with 6 of them being on target but were stopped each time by Ana Carney for Lincoln Memorial who ended the game with 20 saves.

Lander would finally find the breakthrough just under five minutes into the second quarter as an Annika Fuhrmann (Munich, Germany) shot would be saved but rebound right to Punt who slotted home her third goal of the season to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead. From there Lander never looked back as less than three minutes later Dusty-Rose Miller (Crisfield, Md.) would find the back of the cage amongst a scrum of players to double the Bearcats' lead heading into the halftime break.

Two more quick succession goals would start the third quarter as Philippine Drost (Almelo, Netherlands) found the back of the net just over a minute into the quarter and Justina Bossa (Cordoba, Argentina) would add the fourth goal 1:23 later to make it 4-0 in favor of the hosts.

Lincoln Memorial would get their first and only shot of the game on a penalty corner around the 36 minute mark but the shot would be blocked and the Bearcat defense was once against stout, recording their fourth shutout in six games played.

Victoria Hulst (Maarssen, Netherlands) would add the final goal of the game with just under five minutes to play in the third as a Charlotte Van Galen shot was saved into a group of players in front of the net and Hulst was there to slot it home.

The Bearcats put up eight more shots in the fourth quarter but could not find the sixth goal.

The Blue and Gold return to Frank Hill Stadium on Saturday to face seventh-ranked Mount Olive at 1:00 PM.
