Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Lander Battles but Falls to #7 Mount Olive, 1-0

GREENWOOD - The Lander Field Hockey team fought toe-to-toe against the seventh-ranked Mount Olive Trojans but a goal in the third quarter by the visitors proved to be the difference as the Trojans snapped the Bearcats' five-game winning streak with a 1-0 victory.

Mount Olive improved to 9-1 overall and a perfect 8-0 in SAC play while Lander fell to 5-2 overall and in SAC play.

The first half of the game was a back and forth affair that saw each team put up eight shots a piece and force four saves by each goalie as well as a defensive save. However, neither team could find the breakthrough as they went into the halftime break scoreless.

The defensive save by Victoria Hulst (Maarssen, Netherlands) in the second quarter was the first defensive save in program history.

In the third quarter, Mount Olive would find their footing and control play as they outshot Lander 6-1 and with just over five minutes left they would spring a breakaway that found its way past Isabel Elenga (Hillegom, Netherlands) to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

Outside of the goal, Elenga was stellar in net as she made six saves, a career high. She also stopped a couple of Mount Olive breakaway chances that would have increased the Trojans' lead.

In the fourth quarter, Lander would push hard to try to find an equalizer by outshooting Mount Olive 6-2 but several big saves by Alanna Barrett kept the Bearcats off the scoreboard and preserved the win for Mount Olive.

The Bearcats are back at home on Tuesday as they welcome the Converse Valkyries to Greenwood for the first time ever. Converse won the first matchup of the season between the two teams, 3-1.
