Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Hulst Provides More Overtime Magic as Bearcats Win Fourth Straight

GAFFNEY, S.C. - After being on the front foot and dominating offensively for the last few games, the Lander Field Hockey team found themselves in a defensive duel against the Limestone Saints for the second consecutive matchup between the two schools. This time there was an extra period needed and the Blue and Gold once again found the decisive goal, this time off the stick of Victoria Hulst (Maarssen, Netherlands), to give them the 1-0 win on Tuesday afternoon.

This was the Bearcats' fourth consecutive win, the longest win streak in the program's short history, moving them to 4-1 on the season and in SAC play while the Saints fell to 3-3 overall and in SAC play.

Once again, the Bearcats would set the pace offensively early as they would outshoot the Saints 5-0 in the first 30 minutes of action but only put one shot on target.

The first and second quarters were the ninth and tenth times that the Bearcat defense had held their opponent without a shot in a quarter/overtime period this season and at the half Lander had outshot opponents in 16 out of 20 quarters/overtime periods.

After the halftime break, the hosts started to grow back into the game as they would equal Lander in shots, 3-3, in the second half. However, neither team could find the breakthrough as we headed for sudden-death overtime.

In the overtime, the Bearcats found their offensive footing again as they outshot the Saints 5-2, including the last four; all of which were on target and forced saves from the Limestone keeper. On that third shot, Charlotte Van Galen (Bussum, Netherlands) would see her shot saved but rebound out to Hulst waiting in front of goal to slot it home to send Lander home winners.

The Bearcats have a quick turn around as they face the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters on Thursday in a make-up game from the season-opening matchup that was postponed on September 9th. The match is scheduled to start at 5:00 PM at Frank Hill Stadium,
