Gulf Shores, Ala. - The Lander softball team opened up the 2023 season by splitting their opening games of the Gulf Shores Invitational. The Bearcats shutout West Georgia 2-0 in game one but lost to Auburn University Montgomery 8-0 in the second game.
Game One
After a scoreless first inning, Barbara Cook drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Logan Coward. Regan Lunsford then reached on an error to put runners on the corners for Lander. Shannon Antonini then scored Cook on a sacrifice fly to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. After a single by Sage Jones put runners on the corners again, Naya Jones reached on another West Georgia error to score Lunsford to make it 2-0.
That would be all the Bearcats needed as Taylor Scott, making her Lander debut in the circle, allowed just one hit and struck out three to pick up the win. Rylee Omahen, Cook, and Saje Jones each had a single to lead the Bearcat offense.
Game Two
Lander would fall to AUM 8-0 in game two. The Warhawks pitching kept Lander off-balance throughout the game. Bailey Pattison (0-1) took the loss allowing six runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work.
