Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Bearcats Score First Ever Win Over Ranked Team - Top #8 Millersville in Overtime

MILLERSVILLE, Pa - The Lander Field Hockey team had come close to knocking off a top-ten team on three occasions so far this season and on Sunday afternoon, they finally got their payoff as they knocked off the eighth-ranked Millersville Marauders in overtime, 3-2.

Lander improved to 10-4 on the year while Millersville dropped to 9-6.

The Marauders started the game on the front foot as they forced two saves from Isabel Elenga (Hillegom, Netherlands) in the first 15 minutes, including a stick save on a lob shot. Elenga finished the game with four saves.

The Bearcats started to grow into the game in the second quarter, outshooting Millersville 6-0 including four shots on target. Unfortunately, they could not find the back of the cage and the game went into halftime still scoreless.

Five minutes into the third quarter, the Marauders earned a penalty corner, however after some discussion from the umpires they were instead awarded a penalty stroke which was slotted home by Caitlin Wasserman to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

It appeared Millersville was going to take the lead into the fourth quarter until the Blue and Gold were awarded a penalty corner as the horn expired so they were allowed to take it and it was converted as Aniek Vreeken (Utrecht, Netherlands) slotted home the tying goal to bring the Bearcats level heading into the final frame.

With just over 5 minutes to go in the game, Vreeken would strike again off an assist from Annika Fuhrmann (Munich, Germany) to give Lander the lead. However, Millersville did not go quietly as they struck less than a minute later off a penalty corner of their own to level the game and eventually send it to overtime.

In the extra frame, Lander dominated offensively, outshooting the Marauders 5-0. On that fifth shot, Vreeken would secure her hat trick as the horn was about to expire to give the Bearcats the win.

The Lander Field Hockey team returns home and to South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday when they face the Newberry Wolves in a game that could decide the two-seed in the upcoming SAC Tournament. The match is scheduled to start at 6:00 PM at Frank Hill Stadium.
