GREENWOOD, S.C. - With the number two seed in the upcoming South Atlantic Conference tournament on the line and a wild crowd inside Frank Hill Stadium, the Lander Field Hockey team battled for 60 minutes and then some but came up just short in overtime falling to the Newberry Wolves, 1-0.
Lander dropped to 10-5 and 9-4 in SAC play and will host a quarterfinal game next Tuesday as a three or four seed. Newberry improved to 13-3 overall and 10-3 in SAC play and earns the two seed and a bye to the semifinals of the SAC Tournament.
Despite the 10-4 shot advantage in favor of the Wolves, the game was a back and forth affair with each time having several good chances and alternating control off the ball in each other's attacking halves. However, neither team could find the breakthrough in 60 minutes of action and we headed into golden goal overtime.
In overtime, Lander would control the ball for the first couple of minutes but a foul would give the ball to Newberry and the Wolves wasted no time as a slapshot from the top of the shooting circle got through everyone and into the back of the net to give the visitors the win.
The Bearcats conclude the regular season on Saturday as they travel to face #5 Mount Olive for a 1:00 PM start.
