SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Lander held off FLagler 3-1 Saturday afternoon to extend their winning streak to 16 games. The win was the Bearcats' 20th of the season, giving them 20+ wins in back-to-back seasons.
The Saints used a 5-0 run early in the first set to take a 9-5 lead over Lander. Trailing 15-12, the Bearcats cut the deficit to one point with a kill by Katie Miller and a block from Olivia Dow and McCayla Willingham. The Bearcats continued to battle from behind, and a kill by Miller and an ace from Ashlynn Olsen gave Lander a 21-20 lead. The teams traded points until the match was tied at 23, and the Bearcats would finish the set with a kill by Willingham and an attack error by the Saints.
Flagler would respond to take the second set 25-22 to tie the match at one. With the score tied at 13 in the third set, the Bearcats scored three unanswered points to take the lead 16-13 and cruise to the 25-19 win.
The Saints would not go down without a fight, leading for much of the fourth set. Trailing 18-15, Lander would score three out of four points to make it a 19-18 score. Flagler added two more points to lead 21-18. The Bearcats got three-straight points on an attack error by the Saints and kills by Blondie Penaflor and Miller to tie the set. Flagler would get to set point, leading 24-23, but Lander would tie the score, and the teams continued to swap points. With the score tied at 26, Lander would take the lead on another attack error, and Christina Aguayo's kill gave Lander the win.
Katie Miller had another double-double with 22 kills and 14 digs, while Lauren Dow led all players with 40 assists to go with 18 digs. Patricia Pantoja finished with a game-high 22 digs, and Blondie Penaflor had five blocks.
