Men's lacrosse looks to stay hot as it hosts Flagler in conference action on Saturday

GREENWOOD – After another impressive showing in conference action, the Lander men's lacrosse team hosts Flagler College for the first time in program history on Saturday.

STORYLINES

  • The Bearcats are coming off a 20-9 PBC victory over Young Harris on the road.
  • Lander was led by Carter Wilcox's four goals. Adam Mather had three goals on the day while three Bearcats had two goals each.
  • Wilcox led the way in points with six against the Mountain lions. Jake Watson collected eight ground balls while going 15-of-20 in faceoffs. Alex Ellis led the way in caused turnovers with two while Lander caused seven as a team.
  • Lander is currently tied in the PBC with Flagler and Alabama-Huntsville with a 2-0 record. Montevallo, Shorter and Young Harris are all tied for fourth with an 0-2 conference record. Lander is the only team in the PBC to have an overall winning percentage above .500, UAH is currently 6-6 overall.
  • The Bearcats continue to lead the PBC in multiple categories. Lander is first in total goals scored (204), scoring margin (5.7), shot percentage (.338), save percentage (.561), total ground balls (607), caused turnovers (132), total clears (268), goals per game (15.69), assists per game (8.46), total assists (110), points per game (24.15), total points (314), total shots on goal (392), ground balls per game (46.69) and is tied for the fewest goals allowed (130).
  • Individually, Wilcox and Mather are the top to goal scorers in the conference. Wilcox is first in total goals (39) and goals per game (3.00), while Mather is second in both categories with 36 goals and 2.77 goals per game. Mather is second in assists per game and leads the conference in total assists with 23.
  • Mather and Wilcox are also fists and second in the PBC for total points. Mather leads the conference with 59 points while Wilcox is second with 49.
  • Liam Mackay leads the PBC in GAA with a 9.74 average this season. He also leads the conference in save percentage with a .575 percentage. 
  • On the national stage, the Bearcats rank highly as well. Lander is currently 11th in total assists, 15th in assists per game, 21st in caused turnovers per game, 6th in clearing percentage, 30th in face-off percentage, 1st in total ground balls and ground balls per game, 24th in man-up offense, 13th in opponent clearing percentage, 6th in total points, 11th in points per game, 22nd in total saves, 20th in scoring defense, 12th in scoring margin, 7th in scoring offense, 10th in shot percentage and 18th in winning percentage.
  • Wilcox is also currently 19th in goals per game in the country.
  • Lander is outscoring opponents 204-130 this season.
  • Wilcox leads the Bearcats in foals with 39. Mather is the leader in assists with 23 and points with 59. Mather is also second in goals with 36.
  • Watson leads the squad with 49 ground balls this season and has won 114 face-offs. Wilcox is close behind in ground balls with 42. 
  • James Linn is the leader in caused turnovers with 13 while Ellis is second with 11.
  • Mackay is currently 9-3 this season in the cage for Lander. Playing and starting all 13 games, he's played over 419 minutes while allowing just 68 goals and making 92 saves. Nicholas Paige has made 12 appearances this season for just under 300 minutes of action. Paige has allowed 53 goals whole making 67 saves this season.
  • Flagler, in its first season as a varsity program, is coming off back-to-back conference victories over Young Harris and most recently Shorter.
  • The Saints outscored their opponents 39-14 in those two wins.
  • Against Shorter, the Saints had a 7-4 lead at halftime but split the game wide open with eight unanswered goals in the third.
  • Geraint Shaw led the way for the Saints against the Hawks with five goals. Shaw was tied in points with seven as Drew Flagg has three goals and four assists against the Hawks.
  • Matt Mitrega collected five ground balls and went 7-of-12 in face-offs.
  • Nate Lehr played all 60 minutes in net where he made 9 saves while allowing seven goals en route to the win.
  • The Saints on the season have been outscored 123-193.
  • Shaw is leading the Saints in goals with 20 on the season. Tom Ty is the leader in assists and points with 11 assists and 29 points on the season. Jake Griffin leads the Saints with 48 ground balls while winning 69 face-offs this season. Mitrega has won 61 face-offs.
  • Lehr and Tim Russell have split the majority of time in net for the Saints. Russell has played in 10 games while making four starts. He's played in over 338 minutes where he's made 68 saves while allowing 107 goals and holds a 1-5 record. Lehr has played 330 minutes where he's allowed 70 goals and made 66 saves while holding a 1-5 record.
  • The Saints host UAH next on April 23 while Lander hosts Belmont Abbey in non-conference action on April 20 at Van Taylor Stadium for a 3:30 pm start.
