WINGATE, N.C. - Fifth-seeded Lander upset fourth-seed Anderson 3-1 Friday evening to advance to the Southeast Regional semifinals. The win is just the second NCAA win in program history.
Anderson looked to take control early as they took the first set 25-20. The Bearcats came out on fire in the second set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Later in the set, the Trojans would take the lead 18-17, but a Trojan service error tied the game up, and an ace from Christina Aguayo gave Lander the lead again. Kills by Maya Walker and Katie Miller make it 21-18 Bearcats. Lander scored the set's final four points to tie the match at one.
With Lander trailing 16-15 in the third set, Madilyn Reed would find Miller for another kill and spark a 4-0 run to give Lander a 19-16 lead. The Trojans battled back and tied the match at 22, but Lander responded with the final three points to take the set 25-22.
Anderson went on a 7-0 run in the fourth set to take a 12-6 lead over Lander. The Bearcats slowly battled back, and a kill by Aguayo and a Trojan attack error tied the set at 18. A block by Aguayo and Walker gave Lander the lead once again. Leading 23-22, Lander would get kills by Miller and Annie Holesinger to complete the upset win over Anderson.
Katie Miller led all players with 21 kills, while Madilyn Reed dished out a game-high 45 assists. Maya Walker and Annie Holesinger each had 11 kills, while Patricia Pantoja led all players with 30 digs. Holesinger and Walker also had four and three blocks, respectively.
Lander advances to face the winner of the Wingate-USC Aiken match tomorrow at 7:30 PM.
