WINGATE, N.C. - Top-seed Wingate held off fifth-seed Lander 3-1 Saturday night in the semifinals of the Southeast Regional.
Wingate jumped out to a 13-5 lead early in the first set. Lander used a 4-0 run to make it a four-point deficit. The Bearcats continued to try to battle back, but the Bulldogs would take the set 25-18.
Trailing 9-6 in the second set, A kill by Maya Walker sparked a run of five unanswered points by Lander to give the Bearcats an 11-9 lead. The Bulldogs responded to regain the lead 13-11. Lander went on another run, this time with six unanswered points, to take a 17-13 lead. A kill by Walker ended the set with a score of 25-22 to tie the match at one.
Midway through the third set, the Bearcats trailed Wingate 15-11. Two kills by Walker and an attack error from the Bulldogs cut the Wingate lead to one. The teams traded points, but with the Bulldogs leading 16-15, Wingate went on a 7-0 run to take a 23-15 lead and went on to win the set 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead.
Trailing 12-11 in the fourth set, Madilyn Reed took a pass from Patricia Pantoja and got the kill to tie the set at 12. Wingate answered with three-straight points and continued to lead until the Bearcats used a 3-0 run to tie the set at 21. With the score tied at 24, Katie Miller got the kill to give Lander a 25-24 lead, but the Bulldogs would end the set with three-straight points to take the win.
Madilyn Reed led the Bearcats with her 18th double-double of the season, recording 41 assists and 12 digs. With her 41 assists, Reed breaks the school's career record, finishing with 4,666. Katie Miller also had a double-double, finishing with a game-high 18 kills and 13 digs. Maya Walker had 12 kills, while Annie Holesinger finished with five blocks.
