CLOVER, S.C. - For the second straight game with their season on the line, the Lander Field Hockey Team would only need one goal to extend their season as they took down Belmont Abbey 1-0 on a cold and rainy afternoon in Clover, S.C. The win moves Lander into the SAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday night against Mountain Division Champions, Converse.
Each team would only get one shot off in the first quarter and it seemed the second quarter was heading to another scoreless conclusion until the Bearcats found themselves with three successive penalty corners and on the third one Lieke Toma found Emma Allon for her third goal of the season on what would end up being the game winning goal.
From there, as they did against Limestone, the Bearcat defense was lights out as they only allowed the Crusaders to get two shots total in the entire second half to preserve the 1-0 lead.
As time ticked down in the fourth, the Bearcats found themselves with an opportunity to extend their lead as
Lauren Punt would be awarded a penalty stroke but the ensuing shot would be saved. Allon forced another save in the last minute but it wouldn't matter in the end as the Bearcats secured their fifth one goal victory of the season.
Lander will now turn their attention to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament semifinals on Friday evening on the campus of Converse University. Their opponent will be a familiar one as they will take on the Converse Valkyries for the third time this year. Converse won the first two games but Lander took the then number-seven team in the country to overtime in the last matchup between the two. The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 PM on Friday.
