Bearcats Fall in Conference Semifinals to Conclude Magical First Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Lander Field Hockey team battled to get to this point in the season winning back to back win or go home games in the regular season finale and the conference quarterfinals but were denied an opportunity to progress further as they fell to the ninth-ranked Converse Valkyries in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Semifinals by a score of 5-0.

Converse would be on the front foot in the first half as they would outshoot the Bearcats 16-0 in the first 30 minutes of action. Kelsey Gibbons and Isabel Elenga would be up to the task as they would record nine saves to keep the game scoreless.

As the second half started, the Bearcats would have a couple of opportunities and record their first shot but the Valkyries would start to find the holes in the Bearcat defense as they would score their first goal off of a penalty corner to give the hosts a 1-0 lead heading to the last 15 minutes of action.

In the fourth quarter Converse would add goals on a couple of breakaways, a penalty corner, and a penalty stroke to give us the final scoreline.

The Bearcats will now look ahead to the 2023 season where they are slated to return all but one of their players.
