Overtime Goal Denies Lander Third Straight Win

GREENWOOD - After a 2-0 road trip in Missouri, the Lander FIeld Hockey team returned to the friendly confines of Frank Hill Stadium as they hosted the Newberry Wolves. For the second game in a row, the Bearcats would find themselves level after 60 minutes and would play overtime. Unfortunately, the Wolves were able to find the golden goal just over six minutes into overtime and would come away with the win. 

Newberry, who up until last week was ranked #10 in the NFHCA poll, would dominate the possession game throughout and were put ahead in the 23rd minute on a goal from Tamsin Bangert.

The Wolves' defense was stingy and the Blue and Gold were finding it tough to maintain possession in the attacking zone until the fourth quarter. On the first shot of the quarter, Dusty-Rose Miller would find Sophie Schmitz for her ninth goal of the season. Schmitz has scored in five of nine games this season. 

Despite the shot advantage favoring Newberry, the goalie tandem of Isabel Elenga and Kelsey Gibbons would record three saves a piece to keep the Bearcats in the game. 

The game would head to overtime where Newberry would find the winner in the 67th minute of action to deny Lander's bid for a third straight win.

Lander now hits the road for three straight games as they travel to #6 Converse on Tuesday, Newberry on Thursday, and wrap up the road trip on Saturday at Wingate. The Bearcats' next home game is on Tuesday, November 1st as they host Coker. This will be the final home game of the season and the team will honor their lone senior, Kelsey Gibbons, prior to the game.
