Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Bearcats Dispatch Saints to Open Road Trip

ST. LOUIS, MO. - The Lander Field Hockey Team started their two-game road trip with a bang as they defeated the Maryville Saints by a 5-0 scoreline on Monday afternoon. This marked the third shutout on the season for the Bearcats who moved to 3-4 on the season.

Lander would strike early as in the second minute of the game, a Lieke Toma penalty corner would find Sophie Schmitz who would lay it off for Aniek Vreeken for her second goal of the season to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead.

The score would hold until halftime but the Saints were on the front foot for most of the first 30 minutes as they would hold a 9-2 shot advantage and would force three saves from both Kelsey Gibbons and Isabel Elenga but the goalkeeping duo would hold strong to keep the zero on the scoreboard.

Lander would start the second half like they did the first half as less than three minutes in, Justina Bossa would set up Sophie Schmitz for a shot into the upper 90 to double the Bearcat lead. Bossa would set up another goal just over 60 seconds later as she would find Frederique Van Der Houwen for her fourth goal of the season to make it 3-0 less than five minutes into the second half. Van Der Houwen would secure her brace as she would unleash a vicious slapshot into the upper part of the goal to make it 4-0 as the teams headed into the last 15 minutes of action.

After setting up two goals for her teammates, Justina Bossa would get one of her own off the assist from Sophie Schmitz to put the game out of reach for good and secure the Bearcats' third win of the year.

After being outshot 9-2 in the first half, Lander completely flipped the script as they would hold a 14-4 shot advantage over the final 30 minutes of action and would end with a 16-13 shot advantage with 13 of those shots being on target. Through seven games, the Bearcats have put over 63% of their shots on target.

Between the pipes, the duo of Gibbons and Elenga would record eight saves.

Lander is back in action on Wednesday afternoon as they travel just up the road to St. Charles, Mo. to take on the Lindenwood Lions. That game is scheduled to start at 3:00 PM EDT / 2:00 PM CDT.
