Bearcats go 1-2 on opening day of spring season against Clemson

GREENWOOD – The Lander women's rugby team opened its spring 7s season with three matches against Clemson on Saturday afternoon at New Res Field. The Bearcats won the second of the three contests to move to 1-2 on the year.

Lander controlled time of possession the majority of the day's first match, but a pair of Bearcat turnovers led to two tries for the Tigers as Clemson opened the day with a 14-0 victory. The Bearcats execution improved in match two as Lander continued to dominate time of possession. Three Lander tries helped the Bearcats pick up a 17-5 win. In match three, Lander rallied from a 12-0 halftime deficit to tie the score. Clemson regained the lead at 17-12 and forced a turnover as Lander was driving in the final moments, putting the match out of reach with another score to win 24-12.

Jessica Burt led the Bearcats with stellar defense and an impressive ground attack, while Erin Wholey was solid on both sides of the ball.

Lander is back in action next Saturday as the Bearcats host Queens at 12:00 p.m.
