GREENWOOD - The Lander University women's rugby team capped off its home slate in style, earning a commanding 36-8 victory over Coastal Carolina on Senior Day, Saturday, Oct. 25, at New Res Field.
The Bearcats came out with purpose and intensity, fueled by the emotion of honoring their seniors for their passion, dedication and grit throughout their careers. Lander controlled the pace of play from the opening whistle, executing with precision on both sides of the ball.
Tries were scored by Gwen Orr, Carmen Spears, Rachel Hammelman (2) and Lily Venegas (2). Lindsey Pysell added one successful conversion, while Orr tacked on two more to round out the scoring.
Head coach Makayla Lowe-Richesin praised her team's growth and focus as it looks ahead to postseason play.
"Today was a day for growing and prepping as we advance to conference championships," Lowe-Richesin said. "I'm grateful today was filled with a lot of love by honoring our seniors and celebrating everything they've brought to this program. Their leadership and energy continue to set the standard for what it means to be a Bearcat."
Hammelman was named Bearcat of the Match for her two-try performance and relentless energy on both attack and defense.
Coastal Carolina selected Emma Cook as its Forward of the Match and Kaitlyn Ausmus as its Back of the Match for their outstanding efforts.
The Bearcats now turn their attention to the South Atlantic Rugby Conference Championships, where they will face James Madison University next Saturday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. at Charlotte Rugby Park.
