RICHMOND, Va. – The Lander women's rugby team continued its spring 7s season with a win, a loss, and a tie against Queens on Saturday.
Lander took an early 7-0 lead on a Jessica Burt try in game one, but the Royals responded with 25 unanswered points to earn a 25-7 win in the first clash of the day. Game two began with another Bearcat score courtesy of Erin Wholey before Queens knotted the score at 5-5 entering halftime. Trailling 10-5, Lander answered as Paige Fister set up Burt for another try to tie the match. Burt scored again in the waning minutes and Julia Anhalt's kickoff pinned the Royals deep as Lander held on for a 15-10 victory.
The Bearcats trailed 19-0 at halftime of game three, but Fister led a Lander defense that shut out the Royals in the second half. Burt put Lander on the board and Wholey followed with a try of her own to trim the deficit to 19-12. After winning possession on a scrum, Burt broke free for another score and Anhalt converted the kick to end the game in a 19-19 tie.
Lander is back in action on Apr. 10 against Alderson Broaddus.
