Box Score WILSON, N.C. – The Lander men's lacrosse team erased a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter on Monday afternoon, but saw Barton net the game-winning goal with seven seconds left, giving the Bulldogs a 13-12 win.
Lander (2-1) jumped all over Barton early as five different Bearcats scored in the opening 10 minutes to give Lander a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, the Bulldogs responded with six goals of their own in the second period, taking a 7-6 lead into the locker room.
After the clubs traded goals in the third quarter, Barton (3-1) netted three goals in a 41-second span to build an 11-7 lead with 11:19 to play. Quinn Ingalls scored twice to cut the deficit in half and a Nolan Oakey goal made the score 11-10 at the 7:58 mark. After Barton padded the lead with its fourth goal of the quarter, Carson Theriault found the back of the net with 6:43 to play and Drew Wilson knotted the score with 2:36 to go in regulation. With just second ticks left on the clock, the Bulldogs' Zach Hodge scored the game-winner as Barton held on for the victory.
Wilson and Ingalls both scored three goals, while Adam Mather dished out a pair of assists. Caedmon Ferrell collected four ground balls and Igalls, Oakey, and Liam Mackay each caused three Bulldog turnovers. On the day, Barton held a 48-44 shot advantage and led Lander in ground balls, 43-31. Mackay made a season-high 15 saves in goal.
Lander visits Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
