Box Score GREENWOOD – The Lander men's lacrosse team opened its 2021 campaign with an 11-3 non-conference victory over Chowan at Van Taylor Stadium. Krew Conroy had three goals and one assist, Drew Wilson scored three goals, and Liam Mackay made 10 saves.
Lander (1-0) broke open a 3-2 game with five consecutive goals from the 3:39 mark in the first quarter until the 7:50 mark of the second. The Bearcats then blanked the Hawks (0-1) in the second half.
Mackay and the Bearcats' defense held Chowan to three goals on 29 shots. Lander held a 55-38 ground ball advantage and put 23 shots on target against 15 from Chowan.
Adam Mather tallied a pair of assists, while Noah Longest, Micah Oslund, Carson Theriault, Quinn Ingalls, and Nolan Oakey each scored once.
Wilson's trio of goals spurred the Bearcat run, as he found the back of the net twice late in the first quarter and again midway through the second.
Lander succeeded on 22 of its 23 clear attempts on the day and won the face-off battle, 10-8.
The Bearcats return to action on Feb. 17 as they host Emmanuel at 3:30 p.m.
