GREENWOOD - Lander women's rugby hosted The Citadel for two matches of 10s rugby; it's the last home match this Fall.
Bailey Burt scores her first of four tries on the day in the first minute of the first match. Senior Jess Grillo followed things up in the fifth minute with a try of her own to make the score 10-0. Jess Burt found the try zone next for the Bearcats while Julia Anhalt got her first of seven conversions on the day. On the last play of the first half, Jess Burt scored a try again with an Anhalt conversion to make it 25-0 Lander.
Erin Wholey scored the first points of the second half with a try and Anhalt converted the kick. Consistent defense from the Bearcats kept The Citadel's possessions short in this first match and allowed the Bearcats many scoring opportunities. Bailey Burt found the try zone for the second time in the sixteenth minute of the second half while Julia Anhalt kept going with her consistent kicking. Her kicking on the day was through the posts and well placed on the kickoffs as well. In the nineteenth minute of the match, She-Lea Davison capped the match with a try. 44-0
Match two started with the same person putting up points first, Bailey Burt gets her hat trick on the day with a Julia Anhalt conversion in the third minute. After a longer possession by the Bulldogs, Jill Stewart received a quick ball and drew in a defender, then transitions the ball to Kaylynn Hamby, setting up Erin Wholey's second try. It was a great team score, with an Anhalt conversion to cap it off. At the end of the half, Bailey Burt gets her fourth try on the day and centered the ball under the post for the sure-footed Anhalt. 21-0
In the second half, the possession was a little more balanced with The Citadel keeping the ball for more phases. Abbi Melton had a powerful run and barreled through several defenders to score her lone try on the day. The second match ends with the Bearcats on top 26-0
Lander will enjoy an off week before they head to Alderson Broaddus for their next match.
