Recarte has big game as No. 13 Lander beats Clayton State, 85-50

GREENWOOD – The No. 13-ranked Lander women's basketball got double-doubles from Miriam Recarte and Makaila Cange as the Bearcats beat Peach Belt Conference rival Clayton State 85-50 Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena.

Lander had five players score in double figures, improving to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the PBC.

The Lakers fell to 1-1 overall, 1-1 in the league.

It was Lander's 11th consecutive victory over Clayton State and evened the all-time series at 20 wins apiece.

The Bearcats have won their last 16 games in the month of January and are 93-15 at Horne Arena since 2013-14.

It was a career game for Recarte, who had 13 points while leading the team with a career-high 15 rebounds, six blocked shots and five assists. The junior center had 14 defensive rebounds for Lander.

Cange led all scorers with 19 points on six of eight shooting from the floor while grabbing 12 rebounds. It was Cange's third double-double in four games this season for the Bearcats.

Zamiya Passmore added 14 points for Lander, Sarah Crews scored 11 points and Amiaya Melvins added 10 points. Crews and Passmore had four assists apiece.

Jada Francois Luban led Clayton State with 10 points while Jessica Maye paced the visitors with seven rebounds. Kerry Watson led the Lakers with five assists and five steals.

Lander took control of the game in the first quarter with a 16-2 run, stretching an 8-7 lead to 22-9 with 3:20 left in the period on a long 3 from the top of the key by Crews. The Bearcats did not score again the rest of the quarter but still led 24-13 going into the second period and their lead stayed in double figures the rest of the way.

Crews made her third 3 of the game to increase Lander's lead to 29-15 with 8:30 left until halftime.

Natalia Crooke's steal and driving layup gave the Bearcats their first 20-point advantage at 38-18 with 5:13 to go. Cierra Revelle made two 3s and Quin'De'Ja Hamilton added one as Lander expanded on its lead late in the half.

The Bearcats were up 49-23 at halftime.

Clayton State opened the second half with a 12-0 run, pulling within 49-35. Lander was 0-for-4 from the floor and committed five turnovers in the five-plus minutes of the third quarter.

But Hamilton's 3 broke the scoring drought as the Bearcats ended the quarter on an 11-4 run, taking a 60-39 lead going into the final period.

Passmore's 3 from the left side extended Lander's lead to 70-39 with 6:25 to go.

The Bearcats went on a 10-0 run as their advantage grew to 81-44 with 2:45 left on Recarte's final basket.

Lander will host Francis Marion in a PBC game at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 13.
