Box Score GREENWOOD – The Lander women's basketball team outscored Augusta 56-22 in the second half, turning a halftime deficit into an 86-55 Peach Belt Conference victory Wednesday night at Horne Arena. Tabitha Dailey scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the second half to pace the Bearcats.
Lander (9-3 overall, 4-0 PBC) extended its winning streak to five games while earning its 12th consecutive victory against Augusta. The Jaguars fell to 6-6, 3-1.
After shooting only 24 percent from the floor in the first half (eight of 34), the Bearcats shot 68 percent after halftime (23 of 34). Lander made 13 of 17 (76 percent) shots in the pivotal third quarter.
The Bearcats improved to 8-0 this season when scoring 70 or more points. Lander started 4-0 in the league for the first time since 2014-15 and is one of two current unbeaten teams in the PBC (North Georgia is 5-0).
"At halftime, we talked about 'it's our house, it's our gym,'" said head coach Kevin Pederson. "If we're going to go down, let's at least go down being the team that plays the hardest. We needed to look like the home team in the second half."
Last year, the Bearcats outscored Augusta 68-17 in the second half of another game in which they trailed at halftime.
Dailey made nine of 14 shots from the floor Wednesday while also leading Lander with eight rebounds. She hit seven of eight shots in the second half.
Jessica Harris added 21 points for the Bearcats, making four of seven shots from 3-point range.
Aniaya Jester scored a career-high 14 points for Lander while Zamiya Passmore added nine points and seven boards. Makaila Cange contributed five points and six rebounds for the Bearcats.
Kennedi Manning paced the Jaguars with 12 points while Kiera Howard added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Cameryn Wilson added five steals for Augusta.
Lander made only three of 16 shots in the first quarter and trailed 15-12 going into the second period.
Harris hit a pair of 3-pointers and added two free throws during a personal 8-0, rallying the Bearcats from a 19-14 deficit into a 22-19 lead with 7:33 left in the half.
Wilson's 3 with 53 seconds left and Asia Harrison's bank shot with one second to go rallied Augusta back into the lead, 33-30, at halftime. There were 10 ties and 14 lead changes in the opening half.
The Bearcats used a 9-0 run to take the lead for good, turning a 37-35 deficit into a 44-37 advantage with 5:42 left in the third. Dailey had a basket and a three-point play, while Passmore and Cange also scored.
Passmore and Dailey each added two more baskets while Harris made her third 3 of the game as Lander extended its lead to 59-47 going into the final quarter.
Dailey, Amiaya Melvins and Jester each had steals and layups in the opening minutes of the fourth period as the Bearcat lead grew to 22 points, 72-50.
Dailey put back her own miss, upping Lander's lead to 79-52 with 3:20 to go. Miriam Recarte added a couple late baskets as the Bearcat advantage exceeded 30 points.
