Johnson, Langford lead Bearcats past Georgia SW

GREENWOOD – Breshay Johnson scored 28 points and Destinee Langford added a career-high 20 points as the Lander Bearcats pulled away from Georgia Southwestern 90-64 in a Peach Belt Conference game Friday night at Horne Arena.

Lander extended its home-court winning streak to 12 games dating back to the 2015-16 season, improving to 9-3 overall, 3-1 in the PBC.

The Hurricanes fell to 8-3, 3-1.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon but was moved back one day due to forecasted inclement weather.

Johnson made 11 of 14 shots from the floor, falling just short of her career-high of 30 points versus Allen University Nov. 25, 2014.

Langford made four 3-pointers on her way to 20 points while leading the Bearcats with seven assists. Ty'hesha Reynolds followed up her school record tying 41 points of Wednesday night with 17 more Friday, and Mylea McKenith added 16 points.

Reynolds and Johnson led Lander with six rebounds apiece. Reynolds and Jessica Harris each dished out six assists while Johnson added five assists. The Bearcats had 27 assists to only 11 turnovers while making 33 of 64 shots (52 percent) from the floor.

Chanice Whitton paced Georgia Southwestern with 12 points while Va'Queshia Hall and Aleah Holden added 10 points apiece. Brittany Grant added eight points on four of four shooting from the floor.

The Bearcats took the lead for good in the first quarter when they broke an 8-all tie, scoring 12 unanswered points for a 20-8 lead. Reynolds started the run with a 3, McKenith scored twice, while Johnson had three points and Langford added a basket. Lander led 25-16 going into the second period.

The Bearcats blew the game open in the second quarter, outscoring Georgia Southwestern 24-10. Langford and Reynolds each made a pair of 3s in the second period, helping stake Lander to a 49-26 halftime lead.

Reynolds, Johnson and Langford had 36 of Lander's 49 first-half points.

Whitton scored three times, Holden added a pair of baskets, and Kris Beckham hit a 3 as the Hurricanes opened the third quarter with a 14-3 run to pull within 52-40 with 5:15 left.

After an exchange of several baskets, Langford's third 3 of the night extended the Bearcat lead to 61-44 with 2:33 left in the third. Lander led 67-49 going into the final period.

The Bearcats opened the fourth quarter with nine unanswered points, including Johnson's two baskets in the paint and Langford's fourth 3-pointer to make it 76-49 with 7:33 to go.

McKenith's jumper upped Lander's lead to 80-51 with 5:40 left.

The Bearcats reached 90 points on Harris's two free throws, making it 90-56 with 2:16 to go.
