Box Score 2 GREENWOOD - The Lander softball team claimed its third sweep of the season Tuesday afternoon when the Bearcats defeated Queens University, 6-5 and 4-1, in a non-conference doubleheader at Doug Spears Field.
The Bearcats, who host Mars Hill in another non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 10, improve to 11-9 overall. Queens slips to 11-12.
In the first game, Lander's Lexi Griffin earned the win, striking out two, walking one and allowing two earned runs on seven hits in six innings.
Queens' Lyndey McCurry (6-4) suffered the loss with one strikeout and four earned runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of relief.
McCurry gave the Royals a 1-0 lead in the opening inning when she smacked a single to right field that plated Taylor Rosenbalm.
Reychel Webster evened the score at 1-all with her first homer of the year, a first-inning shot over the left field fence. The Bearcats then used Emily Marousek's RBI single in the second to take a 2-1 lead when Kelli McCormack scored.
Queens regained the lead in the third after McCurry and Rosenbalm scored on a Lander throwing error, then the Royals added another run in the fourth on Samantha Martinez's RBI double to make it 4-2.
Destiny Clyde's two-RBI double to right field in the fourth scored Casey Kent and Marousek, then Clyde went home on a balk and Webster drove in Casey Wooten to give Lander a 6-4 advantage.
For Lander, Webster and Marousek had two hits each, while the Royals' Rosenbalm had three.
In the second game, Kenzi Ferguson (8-4) earned the win on the mound with six strikeouts, one walk and one earned run on four hits in the complete seven innings.
The Royals' Catelyn Presley (2-4) took the loss after allowing four earned runs on seven hits in six innings.
The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Madison Moore's RBI single that drove in Dariean Ward.
Abby Lathan cut the Bearcat lead to 2-1 in the third with a solo homer to left field, but Lander's Moore came right back with an RBI double to make it 3-1 in the bottom of the inning.
Chandler Carey doubled in Ward for the Bearcats' final run.
Ward and Moore had two hits each for Lander.
