Lady Bearcats to face FMU in NCAA first round today

GREENWOOD - The Peach Belt Conference tournament champion Lander women's basketball team earned the No. 2 seed and will face seventh-seeded Francis Marion at 2:30 p.m., today, in the opening round of the NCAA Southeast Regional, which will be hosted by top-seeded Limestone College in the Timken Center. The winner of the eight-team Southeast Regional will advance to the Elite Eight, March 22-25, in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Lander, which swept FMU during the season -- 94-88 at Lander and 75-65 at FMU -- earned the PBC's automatic berth into the national tournament when the Lady Bearcats defeated Columbus State, 72-68, in the championship game on Sunday. The victory was the 300th career win for Lady Bearcat head coach Kevin Pederson.

The winner of the Lander-Francis Marion game will advance to play the winner of No. 3 Columbus State/No. 6 Wingate at 5 p.m., Saturday, March 12. The Southeast Regional championship game is set for 7 p.m., Monday, March 14.

In the other half of the regional bracket, top-seeded Limestone will meet No. 8 Augusta at 5 p.m., Friday, and No. 4 Clayton State will face No. 5 Anderson at 7:30 p.m.
