GREENWOOD - The Lander men's tennis team, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, lost its first match of the season Friday afternoon when it fell to Georgia Gwinnett, the top-ranked NAIA team, 7-2, at The Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
Lander moves to 2-1 overall, while the Grizzlies improve to 3-0.
In singles, No. 1 Kevin Konfederak (GG) def. Marc Hofer (L), 6-1, 6-3; No. 2 Jordan Cox (GG) def. Chris Devoize (L), 7-6, 6-3; No. 3 Matias Hatem (GG) def. David Korsten (L), 6-1, 6-1; No. 4 Gilad Berman (GG) def. Alexandre Springer (L), 6-4, 6-4; No. 5 Ozan Cildir (L) def. Tony Licata (GG), 6-4, 6-4; and No. 6 Charles Baron (GG) def. Luke Morlano (L), 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles, No. 1 Konfederak/Cox (GG) def. Hofer/Springer (L), 8-2; No. 2 Devoize/Korsten (L) def. Berman/Morland; and No. 3 Hatem/Connor Clements (GG) def. Cildir/Charles Baron (L), 8-3.
Lander will next open the Peach Belt Conference portion of its schedule when it travels to Augusta University for a 2:30 p.m. match on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
