No. 26 Lander Men’s Tennis Falls to No. 4 Flagler in NCAA Southeast Regional

Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 26 Lander men's tennis team saw its NCAA Tournament run come to an end Sunday afternoon, falling 4-0 to No. 4 Flagler College in the first round of the NCAA Southeast Regional at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.

The sixth-seeded Bearcats (12-7) battled the third-seeded Saints (19-4), but Flagler claimed the doubles point and three straight singles victories to advance.

Flagler grabbed an early advantage in doubles play, beginning with a 6-1 victory on court one as Simon Malis and Ilian Borlee defeated Harry Pugh and Brendan Jayaprakash. The Saints then secured the doubles point on court three, where Aniss Rafiq and Filip Kana earned a 6-2 win over Ismail ElShafei and Benjamin Bates. Lander's tandem of Anton Krondell and Max Barriere held a 4-2 lead in the unfinished match on court two.

In singles, Flagler extended its lead with a straight-set win on court three. Borlee defeated Julian Peter 6-0, 6-3 to make it 2-0.

The Saints added another point on court two as nationally ranked Rafiq posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Barriere.

Flagler clinched the match on court four, where Raphael Rousson earned a 6-1, 6-1 win against Krondell.

Several matches remained unfinished at the time of the clinch. On court one, Pugh had rallied after dropping the second set and was tied in the third against Malis after winning the opening set 6-3. Jayaprakash also remained in contention on court five, while ElShafei trailed early in the second set on court six.

Despite the loss, Lander closes the season with a 12-7 record and its 20th straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
