Box Score GREENWOOD – Bre Crum scored 19 points and Ty'Hesha Reynolds scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half as the Lander Lady Bearcats remained in first place in the Peach Belt Conference East Division with their sixth straight win, 68-59 over UNC Pembroke Wednesday night at Horne Arena.
Lander improved to 18-6 overall, 12-3 in the Peach Belt. The Lady Bearcats remained tied for first with Augusta University, which outlasted Flagler College in double overtime Wednesday.
The Braves fell to 10-12, 4-11.
Lander swept the season series against UNC Pembroke.
Crum had 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots to lead Lander. Reynolds scored 16 points, Mylea McKenith added 11 points, and Breshay Johnson contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Ashleigh Zandi paced the Lady Bearcats with four assists.
Jonissa Monley and Mary Robinson led UNC Pembroke, both posting double-doubles. Monley paced the Braves with game highs in points (27) and rebounds (13). She made 10 of her 16 shots. Robinson added 15 points and 11 boards as Pembroke out-rebounded Lander 44-32.
Lander made 27 of 65 shots from the floor (42 percent), six of eight free throws (75 percent) and eight of 26 from 3-point range (31 percent).
The Braves hit 22 of 59 shots (37 percent), 12 of 13 free throws (92 percent) and three of 15 from behind the arc (20 percent).
McKenith's jumper gave the Lady Bearcats a 9-2 lead with 5:35 left in the first quarter, and Crum's 3 upped the advantage to 15-6 at the 2:14 mark. Lander led 15-8 going into the second period.
McKenith hit a 3, giving the Lady Bearcats an 18-11 lead with 8:48 to go in the half, and Zandi's 3 kept Lander in front 21-16 with 3:46 left.
But the Braves responded with 11 unanswered points, taking a 27-21 lead with one minute until halftime. Monley and Airico Williams started the run with baskets, Monley's free throws tied the game and then gave UNC Pembroke the lead, Avery Locklear made a 3, and Monley scored again to complete the run.
Two free throws apiece by McKenith and Crum helped the Lady Bearcats pull within 28-25 at halftime. Lander was outscored 20-10 in the second quarter.
Crum and McKenith, who scored 20 of Lander's 25 points in the first half, got the Lady Bearcats off to a good start in the third quarter. Crum converted a steal into a fast-break layup and McKenith nailed a 3 from the left side, giving Lander a 30-28 lead.
After Reynolds hit a 3 to give the Lady Bearcats a 37-32 advantage, Monley scored twice in a row to cut the score to 37-36.
Monley's three-point play tied the game at 44-all at the 1:09 mark, and Robinson's put-back gave the Braves a 46-44 lead with 42 seconds left. The score remained 46-44 going into the final quarter.
After Robinson's layup gave Pembroke a 48-46 advantage, Lander took the lead for good with a 9-0 run. Jada Wallace and Reynolds scored inside, Reynolds made a 3 from the right wing, and Wallace's interception of an errant Braves pass and driving layup gave the Lady Bearcats a 55-48 advantage with 6:46 left.
Crum's 3 from the left side upped Lander's lead to 60-52 with 4:11 to go. Wallace drove the baseline for a tough layup as the Lady Bearcats led 62-54 with 2:41 left.
After Nadine Ealey's 3 pulled Pembroke within five, Johnson's basket in the paint gave Lander a 64-57 advantage at the two-minute mark.
Johnson's second put-back attempt in a row dropped in, giving the Lady Bearcats a 66-57 lead with 1:10 left. Reynolds made a floater off the glass, upping Lander's lead to 11 with 33 seconds to go as the Lady Bearcats outscored Pembroke 24-13 in the final quarter.
