Men's soccer sees season end at NCAA Tournament

WINGATE, N.C. – The Lander men's soccer team returned to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in as many seasons, but the Bearcats' run ended in Friday night's Southeast Region first-round game as fifth-seeded Lander fell to fourth-seeded Limestone by a score of 2-1.

Lander opened the scoring up in the first half with a goal by Hugo Delhommelle at the 19:05 mark in the first half.

Limestone tied the score in the second half at the 57:41 mark on a goal by Luis Robles.

Robles later added another goal on the assist from Noah Sale at the 91:18 mark. The Saints were able to preserve the lead and eliminate the Bearcats.

Lander tallied five shots on goal on the evening, with two coming from Delhommelle. Limestone attempted six shots on the Bearcat keeper, and PBC Freshman of the Year, Dean Cowdroy.

Limestone (16-3) advances to Sunday's regional championship game against No. 1-ranked Wingate at 1 p.m. Lander ends the season at 14-4-1.

The Saints outshot Lander, 13-11, while Lander held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Bearcat goalkeeper Dean Cowdry tallied four saves, while Limestone's Greg Purvis countered Cowdroy's performance with four saves of his own.
