GREENWOOD - The Lander men's tennis team will be making its second trip in three years to the NCAA Division II Round of 16 next week after defeating Georgia College, 5-0, Monday in the Southeast Region final at The Joe Cabri Tennis Center. (Round of 16 Bracket)
The second-seeded and No. 8-ranked Bearcats improve to 17-3 overall, while third-seeded and No. 20 Georgia College ends the season at 14-9.
Lander swept the three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead, then won at Nos. 1 and 4 singles to clinch the victory. The remainder of the matches were halted when Lander had the needed five points for the win.
In doubles, No. 1 Adam Jonsson/Loic Minery (L) def. Vincent Castermans/Yannick Hass (GC) 8-3; No. 2 Thibaut Leoussoff/Marc Hofer (L) def. Jannik Kumbier/Taylor Powell (GC) 8-6; and No. 3 Benjamin Salle/Samuel Poutignat (L) def. Mattia Campus/Pedro Ecenarro (GC) 8-5.
The Bearcats claimed their first singles victory at No. 4 after Thibaut Leoussoff downed Pedro Ecenarro, 6-1, 6-3, then finished the match at No. 1 with Marc Hofer's 7-6, 6-4 victory over Yannick Hass.
Lander led the remaining four singles matches when the competition was called. At No. 2, Benjamin Salle (L) led Vincent Castermans (GC) 3-6, 6-0, 1-2; No. 3 Loic Minery (L) led Jannik Kumbier (GC) 6-4, 4-3; No. 5 Adam Jonsson (L) led Anton Waern (GC) 6-3, 3-6, 2-0; and No. 6 Diego Zegarra (L) led Taylor Powell (GC) 3-6, 6-3, 2-1.
