GREENWOOD - The No. 8-ranked Lander men's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Tournament Sunday when the second-seeded Bearcats blanked seventh-seeded and No. 39-ranked Young Harris, 5-0, at The Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
Lander improves to 16-3 overall, while Young Harris ends the season at 13-9.
The Bearcats will face third-seeded and No. 14-ranked Georgia College, a 5-0 winner over No. 40 Mount Olive, at 2:30 p.m., Monday, May 4. The Lander/Georgia College winner will advance to the Round of 16, which is scheduled for May 13-16 at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz.
Lander took a 3-0 lead in the doubles competition when No. 1 Adam Jonsson/Loic Minery (L) def. Sebastian Edin/William Edin (YHC) 8-6; No. 2 Thibaut Leoussoff/Marc Hofer (L) def. Guilherme Frias/Raul Quevedo (YHC) 8-5; and No. 3 Benjamin Salle/Samuel Poutignat (L) def. Daniel Tiboldi/Brecht Vangrinsven (YHC) 8-1.
The Bearcats clinched the match when Benjamin Salle defeated Guilherme Frias, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and No. 4 Thibaut Leoussoff downed Daniel Tiboldi, 6-2, 6-0.
The match was halted when Lander earned its fifth point.
In the other singles matches, No. 1 Marc Hofer (L) vs. Sebastian Edin (YHC) 6-6, unfinished; No. 3 Loic Minery (L) vs. Brecht Vangrinsven (YHC) 6-3, 3-1, unfinished; No. 5 Adam Jonsson (L) vs. Federico Terreni (YHC) 6-4, unfinished; and No. 6 Diego Zegarra (L) vs. William Edin (YHC) 6-4, unfinished.
