SURPRISE, Ariz. - The eighth-ranked Lander men's tennis team's upset bid against No. 2 Barry fell short Friday as the Buccaneers took a 2-1 lead in doubles and held on for a 5-2 victory in the semifinal round of the NCAA Division II national tournament at the Surprise Racquet & Tennis Complex.
Barry remains unbeaten at 25-0 and will play for the national championship at 12 p.m., Saturday. Lander ends the season at 19-4.
The Buccaneers gained momentum in doubles when No. 2-ranked Fabian Groetsch/Ahmed Triki downed Lander's No. 3-ranked team of Adam Jonsson/Loic Minery, 8-5, at the No. 1 position. Barry also won at No. 3 after the duo of Franco Echenique/Renato Lombardi defeated Lander's Diego Zegarra/Benjamin Salle, 8-6. Lander's No. 2 doubles team of Marc Hofer/Thibaut Leoussoff beat Barry's Dominik Haider/Kevin Sielmann, 8-6.
In singles, No. 1 Ahmed Triki (B) def. Marc Hofer (L), 6-4, 6-1; No. 3 Nico Dreer (B) def. Loic Minery (L), 2-6, 7-6, 6-0; No. 5 Adam Jonsson (L) def. Dominik Haider (B), 6-3, 6-3; and No. 6 Renato Lombardi (B) def. Alexandre Springer (L), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The remaining singles matches were halted when Barry had enough points to secure the win.
