FLORENCE - The seventh-ranked Lander men's tennis team defeated No. 23 GRU Augusta, 5-0, Friday in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal round at Francis Marion's Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center.
After Lander swept the three doubles matches, the competition was halted when Lander went up 5-0 with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 singles.
The Bearcats advance to Saturday's 1 p.m. semifinal match against third-seeded Georgia College, who was a 5-0 winner over sixth-seeded Young Harris.
Lander, the tournament's second seed, improves to 14-2 overall, while seventh-seeded GRU Augusta drops to 12-8.
In doubles, No. 1 Adam Jonsson/Loic Minery (L) def. Romain Ferreira/Moritz Gehlhaus (GRU) 8-2; No. 2 Thibaut Leoussoff/Marc Hofer (L) def. Romain Brunie/Thomas Sevel (GRU) 8-1; and No. 3 Benjamin Salle/Samuel Poutignat (L) def. Joao Gabriel Freitas/Gustav Anderson (GRU) 8-5.
In singles, No. 1 Marc Hofer (L) def. Romain Ferreira (GRU) 6-2, 6-1; and No. 3 Loic Minery (L) def. Romain Brunie, 4-6, 5-1 (retired).
