Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Lander women's basketball team connected on all 10 of its free throws in the last two minutes Saturday afternoon en route to a 72-67 Peach Belt Conference victory over GRU Augusta at Christenberry Field House.
With one game left in the regular season and assured to host a first-round PBC tournament game on Saturday, Feb. 28, Lander improves to 22-5 overall and 15-3 in the PBC. GRU Augusta drops to 8-17, 7-11.
Aarika Judge led five Lady Bearcats in double figures with a game-high 15 points. Breshay Johnson, Kayla West and Mylea McKenith added 11 points each, while Bre Crum netted 10. Judge, Crum, Brianna Gipson and Cierra Kendrick had five rebounds each.
The Lady Jaguars' Kariel Hutt tied for game-high honors with 15 points, while grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. Camille Gee added 14 points and five assists, Kelsey Fynaardt 12 points and nine rebounds, Kayla Roberts 12 points, and Joshlyn Belcher 10 points.
The Lady Bearcats, who won the rebound battle, 39-37, connected on 20-of-54 floor shots (37 percent), including 6-of-27 threes (22.2 percent), and 26-of-34 foul shots (76.5 percent).
Meanwhile, the Lady Jags were 27-of-60 from the field (45 percent), including 2-of-14 from the three-point line (14.3 percent), and 11-of-18 from the free throw line (61.1 percent).
After four ties in the first half, the last at 13-13, Lander went up 23-15 on a Crum free throw with 3:37 left in the half. Augusta then dropped in three unanswered field goals to trim the Lady Bearcat lead to 23-21 at 1:03.
The two teams battled through four more ties in the second half – the last at 38-38 with 12:17 left in the game – when Lander went on an 8-0 run for a 46-38 lead on a pair of McKenith free throws at 10:28.
The Lady Jags slowly pulled back within one point at 55-54 with 5:09 left to play, but Lander would never relinquish its lead.
