Box Score GREENWOOD – Breshay Johnson led a balanced attack with 14 points as the No. 24 Lander Lady Bearcats cruised to their 13th consecutive victory, beating Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia Regents University 83-56 Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena.
Lander improved to 13-0 overall and continue to lead the PBC East Division at 6-0. The Lady Bearcats have a first-place showdown at USC Aiken (5-1) on Wednesday night.
GRU fell to 2-11, 1-5.
Ten Lady Bearcats played at least 15 minutes with no one playing more than 24 minutes.
Johnson made five of six shots from the floor and four of four free throws to lead Lander.
Bre Crum added 12 points, a team-high seven assists and four steals for the Lady Bearcats. Ty'hesha Reynolds also scored 12 points and led Lander with five steals.
Aarika Judge added nine points for the Lady Bearcats while Cierra Kendrick and Portia McCray each scored eight points. Kendrick led Lander with seven rebounds.
Tavia Sykes paced the Jaguars with 14 points, and Kariel Hutt added a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds while adding three blocked shots. Kayla Roberts paced GRU with six assists.
The Lady Bearcats made 30 of 66 shots from the floor (46 percent), 15 of 20 free throws (75 percent) and eight of 24 from 3-point range (33 percent) while edging GRU 42-39 on the boards.
The Jaguars hit 22 of 59 shots (37 percent), eight of 12 free throws (67 percent) and four of 15 from behind the arc (27 percent).
Hutt's basket in the paint gave Georgia Regents an 8-7 lead with 16:45 left in the first half. More than two minutes passed before anyone scored when Kayla West found Johnson inside for a layup, giving the Lady Bearcats the lead for good at 9-8 with 14:27 to go.
Sabrina Montgomery's basket pulled the Jaguars within 11-10 at the 13-minute mark.
Then Lander went on a game-breaking run, outscoring the visitors 21-5 over the next nine minutes.
Ashleigh Zandi made a 3, Sakezia Kelly and Kendrick each scored in the paint, Johnson hit two free throws, Judge made a 3, McCray scored inside, Reynolds swished a 3, Crum made a layup off a Reynolds steal, and Kendrick put back Judge's missed 3 to give the Lady Bearcats a 32-15 lead.
Georgia Regents scored seven unanswered points as Kelsey Fynaardt made a bucket and Roberts hit a 3 and an inside basket, pulling the visitors within 32-22 with 42 seconds left until halftime.
But Lander closed the half with a flourish as Reynolds made a 3, and Kendrick banked in a turnaround jumper from the free-throw line off a long pass from Crum at the halftime buzzer. It was 37-22 at the break.
Hutt scored twice to pull the Jaguars within 38-26 early in the second half. The Lady Bearcats responded with a 9-0 run to build their first 20-plus point lead at 47-26 with 14:46 left. Briana Gipson scored twice, Judge made a 3, and Reynolds hit a pair of free throws.
Reynolds made a layup on a fast-break to extend Lander's lead to 59-36 at the midway point of the second half. Gipson's layup off Crum's steal made it 65-38 with 7:12 to go.
The Lady Bearcats extended their lead past 30 on Kelly's layup, making it 74-43 with 3:49 left.
