COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 7 Lander men's tennis team defeated No. 26 University of Mount Olive, 5-0, Saturday afternoon and will advance to the second round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament hosted by Columbus State University at the Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center.
Lander, the third seed, will face second-seeded and ninth-ranked Columbus State at 3 p.m. Sunday, for the right to advance to the NCAA's Round of 16, May 14-17, in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The Bearcats improve to 17-4 overall, while Mount Olive ends the season at 18-2.
In doubles, No. 1 Adam Jonsson/Oscar Axelsson (L) def. Edgar Bub/Rik Wolthuis (MO) 8-3; No. 2 Marc Hofer/Niklas Terhorst (L) def. Matt Finnerty/Henric Falkenberg (MO) 8-6; and No. 3 Vincent Lerpeaux/Paulo Fernandes (L) def. Stanley Roffe/Brahm Moolman (MO) 8-5.
In singles, No. 4 Niklas Terhorst (L) def. Stanley Roffe (MO) 6-1, 6-2; and No. 6 Oscar Axelsson (L) def. Lautaro Vazquez (MO) 6-4, 6-0.
The remaining singles matches were halted when Lander secured the needed points for the win.
