Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Shorter College softball team had two home runs in the first game and nine runs in the first inning of the second en route to a doubleheader sweep against Lander Thursday night at Doug Spears Field. Shorter won the first game, 4-0, and the second, 12-1.
Shorter improves to 24-9 overall, while Lander moves to 6-26. The second game was called due to the eight-run rule.
In the first game, Shorter's Christina Ezell (12-6) earned the complete-game shutout striking out 12, walking two and allowing two hits.
Lander's Amanda Chastain (2-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits. M.K. Pegram pitched seven innings of relief with five strikeouts and two earned runs on five hits.
Jackie Castaneda belted a two-run homer in the first inning and Ericka Bynum had a two-run shot of her own in the seventh.
Felicia Morris had two hits for the Hawks.
In the second game, Maddie Bray (4-0) was awarded the win after striking out one and allowing one earned run on four hits in the complete five innings.
Taylor Crawford (3-8) took the loss, after walking four and allowing 10 earned runs on eight hits in three innings.
Megan Christensen and Gracie Ayers each had two-RBI doubles in the first inning, while Bynum and Morris had RBI singles, and Castaneda, Gracie Ayers and Maggie Meachum scored on bases-loaded walks.
Lander cut the margin to 9-1 in the second when Emily Marousek drove in Aubrey Lamar.
Shorter made it 11-1 in the third after Kayla Cooper scored on a bases-loaded walk and Christensen drove in Castaneda.
The Hawks added one more run in the fifth when Tori Willingham scored on a fielder's choice.
Morris, Bynum and Christensen had two hits each for the Hawks.
