Box Score GREENWOOD – Portia McCray posted a double-double and the Lander women's basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak Saturday afternoon when the Lady Bearcats defeated Francis Marion, 74-71, in a Peach Belt Conference contest in Horne Arena.
Lander improves to 9-13 overall and 4-9 in the PBC, while FMU drops to 11-9, 6-8.
McCray, who grabbed 10 rebounds, connected on 6-of-14 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws for 17 points. Ty'hesha Reynolds added 17 points, while Kayla West netted 11 points and dished off five assists, and Alexis Armstrong had seven points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Patriots' Dee Gray posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Chelsea Dukes had 15 points and Kim Roach 13 points and seven rebounds.
Tied at 66-all with 2:24 left in the game, Watkins hit the first of two free throws at 1:56 to give the Lady Bearcats a 67-66 advantage, then Zaneta Kubicka sank two free throws to put Lander up 69-66.
After FMU cut it to 69-68 on a Gray layup at 1:04, Reynolds hit a jumper and Ebonie Hudson the first of two free throws for a 72-68 lead with 11 seconds left. Reynolds swished two free throws to put the game out of reach with nine seconds in the game.
Lander streaked out to a 12-1 lead in the first half on a three pointer by Reynolds, two field goals each by West and Watkins and a free throw by McCray. Francis Marion battled back to tie the game 28-, 30- and 32-all, but Lander ended the half with buckets by Kubicka and Hudson to claim a 36-32 halftime advantage.
Lander connected on 28-of-65 field goals (43.1 percent), including 3-of-15 threes (20 percent), and 15-of-26 free throws (57.7 percent)
FMU, which outrebounded Lander, 43-38, was 20-of-55 from the floor (36.4 percent), including 3-of-11 three pointers (27.3 percent), and 28-of-32 foul shots (87.5 percent).
