Zandi, Armstrong lead Lander past Columbia 102-51

GREENWOOD – Ashleigh Zandi scored 20 points and collected nine steals as Lander took advantage of 54 Columbia College turnovers in a 102-51 non-conference women's basketball victory over the Koalas Wednesday night at Horne Arena.

Lady Bearcats teammate Alexis Armstrong added 19 points and 10 rebounds and has recorded a double-double in all five games this season.

Lander improved to 3-2 while the Koalas fell to 3-5.

Kayla West added 15 points and six assists for the Lady Bearcats, Portia McCray scored 14 points, Jamelia James recorded 12 points and five steals, and Alyssia Watkins added seven points, seven rebounds, six steals and five assists.

Zandi hit four 3-pointers and also had six assists as Lander amassed 27 steals and 26 assists. The Lady Bearcats had 57 points off turnovers.

Azia Gibson led Columbia College with seven points and nine rebounds, while Kaitlyn Smart also scored seven points. BriAna Johnson led the Koalas with four assists.

The Lady Bearcats made 41 of 88 shots from the floor (47 percent), 13 of 25 free throws (52 percent) and seven of 18 from 3-point range (39 percent).

Columbia hit 20 of 45 shots from the floor (44 percent), 10 of 13 free throws (77 percent) and one of six from behind the arc (17 percent).

The Koalas had a 44-34 edge on the boards. Lander committed only 13 turnovers, 41 fewer than Columbia.

When Smart scored for Columbia at the 16:42 mark, Lander led only 8-7. Less than a minute later, Zandi hit a 3-pointer to start a 21-0 Lady Bearcats run fueled by turnovers.

West followed Zandi's 3 with a basket inside for a 15-7 Lander lead, and Zandi's steal led to an Armstrong layup. Ty'hesha Reynolds made a free throw, James came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer, McCray made two free throws, then a pair of James steals led to baskets by Zandi and McCray to make it 27-7 with 11:19 left.

McCray scored again to complete the 21-0 run, making it 29-7 at the 10-minute mark.

Johnson's free throw with 9:59 left was Columbia's first point in almost seven minutes, and Abbeville, S.C., native Kennyatta Gilchrist made a driving layup to pull the Koalas within 29-10.

After Gilchrist scored again for Columbia to close the gap to 30-12, the Lady Bearcats went on another run. A pair of Zandi steals led to baskets by Armstrong and Watkins, then West drove the baseline for a layup to make it 36-12 at the 5:19 mark.

After Columbia's Shahirah King-Dunson scored in the paint to end Lander's 6-0 run, the Lady Bearcats scored eight more unanswered points including a pair of baskets by West for a 44-14 lead with 3:45 left.

The teams scored six points each over the rest of the first half and Lander led 50-20 at the break. The Lady Bearcats scored 29 points off Columbia's 31 first-half turnovers.

The Koalas matched Lander for the first few minutes of the second half with Johnson's basket pulling Columbia within 59-27 with 15:38 left. But the Lady Bearcats stretched their lead with eight unanswered points including 3s by Zandi and West, and a layup by Sakezia Kelly giving them their first 40-point lead at 67-27 at the 14-minute mark.

Lander built its lead to 42 points three times, including McCray's basket off West's steal to make it 75-33 with 11:29 left. The advantage grew to 44, 77-33, when Reynolds scored off a steal by James and nice assist by West.

The Lady Bearcats surpassed the 80-point mark on a James basket, making it 81-40 with 7:15 to go.

A 3 by James upped the advantage to 47 points, 89-42, with 4:22 left. Lander's lead grew past 50 when Zandi hit a trey for a 93-42 advantage.

Ariel Parker's fast-break layup off another Zandi steal gave the Lady Bearcats a 98-45 lead at the two-minute mark.

Lander reached the 100-point mark on Armstrong's two free throws with 57 seconds left, making it 100-47.
