Lander men's soccer advances to NCAA's Sweet 16

GREENWOOD – Clement Dauchy and Michael Johansson scored one goal each Sunday night to lead the Lander men's soccer team to a 2-1 upset victory over No. 19 Queens University of Charlotte in a second-round game of the NCAA Division II Tournament at the Jeff May Complex. The Bearcats improve to 12-5-1 overall and advance to the round of 16. Lander will face Carson-Newman, a 3-2 winner over Limestone, on Friday at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. The game time will be announced on Monday.

Queens ends the season at 16-4.

After a scoreless first half, which saw Lander outshoot Queens, 7-0, the Bearcats took a 1-0 lead when Dauchy fired the ball to the back of the net from five yards out off an assist from Zach Acree at 70:36. The goal was Dauchy's team-leading 16th of the season.

The Bearcats extended the lead to 2-0 at 77:59 on Johansson's 10-yard shot, which was assisted by Dauchy. The score was Johansson's second of the season.

Queens' lone goal of the game came at 88:57 on Erick Suarez's unassisted goal from five yards out.

Lander outshot the Royals, 11-6, and led in corner kicks, 4-1.

Queens goalkeeper Montrell Morgan had two saves and Lander's Barrett Nielsen grabbed one.
