GREENWOOD - Lander's Samuel Poutignat scored a dramatic three-set victory over Augusta State University's Jan Laba Friday night to lead the third-seeded Lander men's tennis team to a 5-4 win over the sixth-seeded Jaguars in the quarterfinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Championship Tournament at The Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
Ninth-ranked Lander improves to 18-3 overall and will face second-seeded Columbus State at 2 p.m., Saturday, in the semfinal round. The championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m., Sunday.
The No. 12-ranked Jaguars, opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches. The team of Bernardo Fernandes/Henrique Boturao defeated Lander's Adam Jonsson/Vincent Verpeaux, 8-3; and Victor Guimaraes/Victor Cabellos downed Lander's Oscar Axelsson/Ross Armstrong, 8-3. Lander's lone doubles point came when No. 3 Paul-Henri Arrigoni and Samuel Poutignat team to defeat Jan Labas/Jenner Stevenson, 8-5.
In singles, No. 1 Fernandes (A) def. Verpeaux (L), 6-3, 6-2, No. 2 Arrigoni (L) def. Boturao (A), 6-4, 6-1; No. 3 Jonsson (L) downed Cabellos (A), 6-1, 6-1; No. 4 Poutignat (L) def. Labas (A), 6-7, 6-3, 7-6; No. 5 Guimares (A) downed Diego Zegarra (L), 6-2, 6-3; and No. 6 Axelsson (L) def. Stevenson (A), 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Second-seeded Columbus State was a 5-1 winner over No. 7 North Georgia. In the other quarterfinal matches, No. 5 Georgia College defeated No. 4 Francis Marion, 5-3, and No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic downed No. 8 USC Aiken, 5-0.
On the women's side, top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic def. Augusta State, 8-0; No. 2 Columbus State def. No. 7 Clayton State, 5-0; No. 3 Francis Marion def. No. 6 USC Aiken, 6-0; and No. 5 Georgia College def. No. 4 Flagler, 5-1.
