LAURINBURG, N.C. - The Lander softball team pounded out 16 hits and Hayley Leissner tossed a one-hitter in the first game, then Arielle Buchholz drove in the winning run in the second game as the Bearcats swept St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 10-1 and 5-4, in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
Lander evened its record at 20-20, while St. Andrews dropped to 8-35.
In the first game, Leissner (11-11) earned the victory after striking out seven, walking one and allowing one earned run in five innings.
St. Andrews' Jessica Wiegers (2-14) took the loss with one strikeout, one walk and three earned runs on seven hits in three innings of work.
Lander took a 1-0 in the second inning when Casey Corbitt's RBI single plated Alyssa Hartley, then the Bearcats stretched their advanage to 3-0 in the third on Arielle Buchholz's two-RBI double that scored Sarah Fuller and Kelsey Davis.
The Bearcats added two more runs in the fourth to make it 5-0 after Taylor Donson's RBI double sent Jaime Presnell home and Kelsey Davis singled in Donson.
St. Andrews scored its lone run of the game in the fourth when Mary Cross reached first after being hit by a pitch and later stole home.
After Lander scored five more runs in the fifth inning, the game was called due to the eight-run rule. Corbitt's two-RBI single scored Hartley and Fuller, Heather Yoder doubled in Corbitt and Buchholz, and Kegan Leissner's RBI single plated Yoder.
For Lander, Corbitt went 3-for-3, Presnell 2-for-4 and Buchholz, Kelsey Davis and Hartley 2-for-3.
In the second game, M.K. Pegram (4-3) was awarded the win after striking out two, walking two and allowing two earned runs on six hits in six innings pitched. Hayley Leissner picked up her third save of the season in one inning pitched.
St. Andrews' Cross (3-6) took the loss in relief after walking three and allowing one earned run on four hits in four innings pitched.
Presnell led the game off with a solo home run and the Bearcats stretched the lead to 2-0 in the second when Fuller doubled and went home on a Buchholz fielder's choice.
St. Andrews made it 2-all in the second on RBI singles by Vanessa Giacomin and Lex Cowger.
Lander went back up 4-2 in the third inning on Chasity Davis' RBI single that scored Donson and Fuller's sacrifice fly that plated Kelsey Davis.
St. Andrews stormed back in the fourth to tie it at 4-all on RBI singles by Cowger and Cross.
Kelsey Davis scored the winning run in the fifth on Buchholz's bases-loaded RBI single.
For Lander, Kelsey Davis batted 3-for-4, Hartley went 2-for-4 and Fuller 2-3.
