GREENWOOD - The Lander softball team earned two shutouts Monday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader sweep against West Liberty (W.Va.) University at Doug Spears Field. The Bearcats claimed the first game, 5-0, and took the second, 7-0.
Lander improves to 15-13 overall, while West Liberty drops to 2-7.
In the first game, Amanda Hamby (2-2) earned the complete game, one-hit, shutout after striking out five and walking one.
West Liberty's Becky Fortuna (0-2) took the loss with one walk and one earned run on five hits in six innings pitched.
The Bearcats went up 1-0 in the first inning when Jaime Presnell, who doubled to left field, advanced home as the result of two wild pitches.
Lander scored an unearned run in the fourth as Presnell singled, advanced to third on a Melanie Davis sacrifice bunt and scored on a throwing error.
The Bearcats added three more runs in the sixth. Sarah Fuller, who was pinch running for Chasity Davis, scored on a throwing error and Casey Corbitt's two-RBI single drove in Alyssa Hartley and Arielle Buchholz.
Presnell went 2-for-3 for Lander.
In the second game, Lander scored three runs in the first inning and four more in the second to claim the win.
Brittney Sheriff, who singled, led off the scoring when she went home on an error, Fuller's groundout plated Taylor Donson and Chasity Davis' double to right field plate Melanie Davis.
In the second, Corbitt doubled, then later scored on Presnell's sacrifice fly, and Melanie Davis followed with a three-run homer to left field.
Kelsey Davis (2-2) earned the complete game shutout, after striking out four and allowing six hits.
Sara Emerich (2-4) suffered the loss with two strikeouts, one walk and seven earned runs on eight hits in six innings pitched.
Sheriff batted 2-for-2 and Melanie Davis went 2-for-3.
