Box Score MORROW, Ga. – Jasmine Judge scored a game-high 24 points Wednesday night to lead the No. 24-ranked Lander women's basketball team to a 59-57 Peach Belt Conference upset against No. 2-ranked and defending national champion Clayton State at the Athletics & Fitness Center. Lander has won eight straight games and 12 of their last 13.
The Lady Bearcats improve to 14-3 overall and remain unbeaten in PBC play at 9-0. Clayton State drops to 18-2 overall and 8-1 in the PBC.
Judge, who entered the game as the second-ranked three-point shooter in the country, connected on 8-of-15 three-point attempts. Janyce Ealey added 11 points and six rebounds, while Ciara Lyons and Mukia Myrick netted 10 points each. Kaylyn Small led Lander in rebounds with 11, and Brittni Johnson tallied four assists and four steals.
Tanisha Woodard scored 15 points to lead the Lady Lakers, while Shacamra Jackson and Drameka Griggs scored 12 points each. Kayla Mobley led Clayton State in rebounds with 12.
After a fairly close first half which resulted in a 27-22 halftime lead for the host Lady Lakers, the Lady Bearcats went to work. Lander opened the second half with a 8-2 run to take a 30-29 lead on a Judge three.
Lander earned its first double-digit lead 11:48 left in the game when the Lady Bearcats went up 44-34 on another Judge three. After a Lakers' 6-2 run cut Lander's advantage to 46-40 with 9:22 left, yet another Judge three put Lander up 49-40 with 8:17 remaining to play.
Over the next seven minutes, Clayton State was able to take advantage of Lander turnovers and close the gap to 59-57 with 1:28 left. The Lady Bearcat defense then held the Lady Lakers scoreless on their next two possessions.
Lander connected on 18-of-58 field goals for 31 percent, including 11-of-30 threes for 36.7 percent. The Lady Bearcats sank 12-of-21 free throws for 57.1 percent.
Clayton State was 24-of-56 from the floor for 42.9 percent, including 1-of-8 threes for 12.5 percent. The Lady Lakers connected on 8-of-13 foul shots for 61.5 percent.
