LAURINBURG, N.C. - Cory Hopper struck out seven and allowed just five hits in seven innings of work to lead the Lander baseball team to a 2-0 non-conference victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian Friday afternoon.
Lander improves to 26-19 overall, while St. Andrews slips to 8-33. Lander's 26 wins is the most victories in a season since the 2006 team won 31 games.
The two teams will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m., Saturday at Lander's Legion Field.
Hopper stretched his record to 7-2 on the season. Todd Hughson struck out three in 1.1 innings of relief and Ross Davis earned his fourth save of the season in one-third of an inning.
St. Andrews' Joe McCarty (2-4) took the loss after striking out four, walking one and allowing two earned runs on four hits in 3.1 innings.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning after Jeff May doubled to centerfield, stole third and went home on a wild pitch.
The Bearcats stretched the lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning when May's sacrifice fly plated Erik Lunde.
Lunde batted 2-for-5 for the Bearcats, while Robert Skinner went 2-for-4.
St. Andrews' Ethan Powell went 2-for-2.
