Lander Falls to GCSU, 9-3, in Series Opener

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Lander baseball team managed just two hits as they fell to Georgia College and State University, 9-3, on Friday evening at John Kurtz Field in the opening game of a Peach Belt Conference series.

GCSU outhit Lander 21-2, the most hits allowed by the Bearcats since February 2018.

The Bobcats created early separation, plating six runs across the first four innings to take a 6-0 lead.

Lander broke through in the sixth as Ryan Hansen launched a two-run homer to put the Bearcats on the board and cut the deficit to four. However, GCSU answered in the bottom half with a run to push the lead back to five.

The Bearcats threatened in the eighth as three straight walks loaded the bases with two outs, bringing the tying run on deck. A balk brought home a run, but Lander was unable to capitalize further with two runners left in scoring position.

GCSU added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach and retired Lander in order in the ninth to secure the win.

The two teams continue the series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
