AUGUSTA, Ga. - The No. 11 Lander men's team fell behind 2-1 in doubles play and couldn't make up the difference in singles competition as the second-seeded Bearcats were upset by No. 20 and seventh-seeded Augusta State, 5-2, Friday evening in the quarterfinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Tourament at the Newman Center.
Augusta State improves to 15-7 overall, while Lander is 16-4. Augusta State advances to Saturday's semifinal round.
At No. 1 doubles, the No. 13-ranked team of Bernardo Fernandes/Henrique Boturao (A) def. Paul-Henri Arrigoni/Carlos Marques (L), 8-3; and at No. 2 singles Victor Cabellos/Victor Guimaraes (A) def. Christopher Mattsson/Oscar Perman (L), 8-4. Lander's No. 3 team of Henrik Willers/Oscar Axelsson def. ASU's Jenner Stevenson/Maxime Coulomb, 8-5.
The Jaguars won at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles to clinch the match.
At No. 2, Boturao (A) def. Willers (L), 6-2, 6-0; No. 3 Cabellos (A) def. Marques (L), 6-3, 6-2; and No. 4 Guimaraes (A) def. Perman (L), 6-1, 6-7, 6-1.
Lander's Axelsson won at No. 5 singles against the Jaguars' Stevenson, 6-3, 6-4.
The Bearcats will now wait to see if they have been selected for a berth in the NCAA championship tournament.
