Box Score PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Lander women's basketball team remained unbeaten in Peach Belt Conference play Saturday afternoon after defeating UNC Pembroke, 65-52, in the English E. Jones Center.
Lander improves to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the PBC, while UNCP drops to 3-3, 0-1.
Ciara Lyons led the Lady Bearcats with 12 points, while Janyce Ealey posted a double-doubled with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kaylyn Small added eight points and seven rebounds, while Kami Phillips netted eight points.
The Lady Braves were paced by Courtney Bolton, who scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
After battling to a 34-34 halftime tie, Lander used a basket by Small and two from Lyons to break a 36-all deadlock and go up 42-36 with 16:23 left in the game. After a Brittni Johnson three gave Lander a 47-40 lead with 11:46 left, UNCP cut the margin to 47-44 on Jasmine Hairston's bucket at 10:34.
From there, Lander went on a 14-2 run to take a 61-46 lead – its biggest of the game – with 4:24 remaining on a Mukia Myrick free throw.
Lander connected on 23-of-61 field goals for 38 percent, including 6-of-24 threes for 25 percent. The Lady Bearcats also made 13-of-21 free throws for 62 percent.
UNCP was 17-of-53 from the field for 32 percent and 1-of-19 from the three-point line for five percent. The Lady Braves sank 17-of-19 foul shots for 89 percent.
