FLORENCE - The No. 7-ranked Lander women's basketball team saw its school-record 14-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday night when the Lady Bearcats fell to No. 19 Francis Marion, 82-71, in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
Francis Marion improves to 21-3 overall and 13-2 in the PBC, while Lander drops to 21-2, 14-1.
Ciara Lyons led Lander with 24 points on 7-of-16 field goals and 10-of-14 free throws, while Shannon McKever posted her 11th double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds to go along with five blocked shots.
FMU was led by Shannon Singleton-Bates, who scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-17 field goals and 3-of-3 foul shots. Eboni Fields added 16 points, while Robin Colbert netted 10 and grabbed nine rebounds. Singleton-Bates also grabbed seven rebounds, while Shana Franks had six.
After the teams were tied 2-2 with 18:07 left in the first half, FMU built up an 8-2 lead on a field goal and a three pointer by Bates and a free throw by Danelle Downs.
Lander broke its nearly five-minute scoring drought when McKever scored on a layup at 13:29 to make it 8-4.
FMU followed with an 8-2 run to take a 16-6 lead at 10:05.
Lyons' three-point play at 7:33 cut the FMU lead to 16-12, but the Lady Patriots followed with a 13-3 run and a 29:16 lead with 4:04 left in the half.
Lander trimmed the lead to 32-23 on Tasheba Butler's layup at 1:52, but FMU ended the half with a 5-0 run and a 38-23 lead.
Fields' three-pointer with 16:45 left in the game gave FMU an 18-point lead at 49-31. But Lander was to make a move and made it 56-47 at 10:14 on a Lyons layup.
With 4:40 left, Lander made another move with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to four at 71-67 with 2:45 left.
FMU came right back with an 11-4 run of their own to end the game
The Lady Patriots made 27-of-71 floor shots for 38 percent (6-of-16 three pointers) and 22-of-30 free throws for 73.3 percent.
Lander connected on 23-of-77 floor shots for 29.9 percent (2-of-13 three pointers) and made 23-of-36 free throws for 63.9 percent.
